First thought: Why in the world would the sculpter go through such an effort to portray what you would want to fix with an iron?
Second thought: Idiot! they didn’t have irons in ancient Greece.
Third thought: So this sculpter was more realistic and skilled than those who depicted smooth chitons.
Fourth thought: But maybe they had another way to make wrinkled cloth smooth, and maybe the person being depicted was slovenly and the sculpter wanted to point that out.
We must have some sympathy with her unironed state, however. It would be hard to keep your frock looking fresh, what with having no head and only one arm an’ all.
