The National Geographic, endless source of information, tells us that these cheerful polka-dot dresses were waitress’ outifts in Kecskemét, Hungary. Certainly more cheerful than the modern uniform of black and white!
On another note: the Author has a hearty appetite herself, but twenty-five chickens for fifteen people seems a very generous ratio.
