What Happened in 1840?

In 1840 Monet, Rodin,Tchaikovsky, Zola and Thomas Hardy were born. With so many prominent births, One might have expected as impressive a death roster. However, the only expiration the caught the Author’s eye was Alexander Nasmyth (Readers will recognize his portrait of Robbie Burns).
In 1840 Children under 21 lost their jobs cleaning chimneys, with Parliament’s passing of the Chimney Sweeps Act, Queen Victoria married Albert, and the Detroit Curling Club was founded in the Motor City (pardon the anachronistic nickname).
