Stunning, yes. They still make me feel itchy though.

I try to imagine them without all the legs, and then they just look like beautiful brooch–except the last beetle, which is actually quite terrifying. I would still dread ever meeting any of them.

The science behind the shiny appearance of the first two is actually really interesting, it is amazing that natural selection has pushed species to develop and use techniques which we are only beginning to understand and use ourselves such as 3D photonic crystals.

‘iridescence has for its main characteristic a change in the hue of the object exhibiting it as the angle of vision is varied’

You can read more about it here

They both go into quite a lot of detail, but you can hopefully get the gist, and the pictures are good too. It can add even more to the sense of wonder when you know what is going on behind the scenes too!

They really are beautiful, but you never know. Do you know the cute little ladybugs that we get in our house? I just read that these are the first incarnation of the dreaded, slow, smelly stinkbug! Like a catipillar to a butterfly, a ladybug to a stinkbug!

Neal, that is brilliant! Thanks for bringing some scientific substance to this aesthetically focused blog.

Pops, Ladybugs just went down in my estimation.
