Steinberg in North Africa
28 March, 2010
Whilst in the Navy, Saul Steinberg (you know him, of course) sketched as he journeyed through North Africa and Italy (click on the images for a closer look).
Some queries and observations:
1. To whom does that basket of Food belong? I’d like it, please.
2. the woman in a burka is wearing pretty risqué pumps. It reminds me of Beirut, where one sees more Stilettos than Burkahs.
3. What Nation incorporated tails and those hats (I wish I knew the name) into its WWII uniform (see far right)?
4. Is that a palm tree in the middle of the street?
5. the Old Man angrily waving his cane at a car that has almost run him over.

I assume the goldfish in the sky in the first picture are actually barrage balloons. Very pleasing anyway. Love the detail in these deceptively simple sketches.
Yes they do look like goldfish! He has a fantastic sense of humor.
