Kiddies and Ciggies

3 December, 2009

I’ve noticed an alarming trend (if two instances separated by 90 years and different continents constitutes a trend) of children and cigarettes.

Exhibit one is from Hungary, circa 1920 or so.  Was it standard practice for photography studios to pose children with cigarettes?  This little cherub seems mischievously pleased with his toy.

Exhibit two was encountered at a road stop in Israel.  The claw grab game was filled with an assortment of stuffed animals and…cigarettes.  Another charming feature of this decidedly non-tourist destination was a group of soldiers playing on a jungle gym.  As the game was named ‘Toy Soldier’, perhaps this game is only intended for the soldier who’s a kid at heart–the soldier who’ll be just as pleased whether the claw grabs a cute pink teddy bear or a pack of Marlborough.
