I passionately recommend reading Thackeray’s Vanity Fair. The above article is a review of the novel, and it goes on to say:
‘Fancy some few hundred years come and gone. Fancy a student turning to the pages, buried–buried but not rotten–of the ficticious literature of the nineteenth century, in search of a true picture of…London…[where] would he find the most satisfactory, the most true, the most intelligible picture? We say in “Vanity Fair”.’
